What is the Insurance commission of WA?

The Insurance Commission of WA is a statutory corporation and Government trading enterprise owned by the Western Australian Government. You will likely only hear about the insurance commission if you have been injured in a road accident and need to make a claim.

What do they do?

The insurance commission manages the motor injury insurance scheme and provides compulsory third party insurance to more than 1.8 million drivers in Western Australia. The WA motor injury insurance scheme is designed to compensate injured road users who have been injured in a road accident that wasn’t their fault.

Who do they represent?

The insurance commission only acts on behalf of at-fault drivers. Because of this, if you have been in an accident that wasn’t your fault, it is important to seek your own independent legal advice as soon as possible.

What does their insurance cover?

At-fault drivers of licenced and registered vehicles are covered for the cost of personal injury and death claims made against them by other roads users. These costs can include compensation and payments for:

• pain and suffering,
• past and future loss of wages,
• claims management expenses,
• medical treatment and rehabilitation
• care and support (even if it was given to you by a family member for free).

Policies also cover the cost of lifetime treatment, care and support for at-fault drivers who have been catastrophically injured in crashes in WA.

The insurance commission will not cover the cost of damage caused to vehicles or property from a motor vehicle crash.
